Cape Town is one of the planet's premier kite destinations because the wind is consistent, side-shore, and predictable. Live conditions for every spot.
The South Easter typically builds from late morning. Most kite sessions start 13:00 and run to 18:00 in summer.
Cape Town's kite season is October to April, peaking December–February. Big Bay is the iconic spot, Dolphin Beach is the bigger-water alternative, Langebaan is for the lighter-wind days. The Cape Doctor (South Easter) delivers reliable side-shore wind 25–35 knots most summer afternoons.
Best for: All levels including beginners. Wind: Side-shore SE perfect. Water: Cold (Atlantic, 13–17°C). Bottom: Sand. Crowd: Busy.
The classic. Multiple schools, gradual sandy depth, side-shore wind. Where most Cape Town kiters started.
Best for: Intermediate to advanced. Wind: Cleaner than Big Bay. Water: Cold. Bottom: Sand. Crowd: Less than Big Bay.
Just south of Big Bay. Wind comes through more cleanly. Better for jumping and freestyle.
Best for: Strong wind days, advanced. Wind: Side-on, often 30+ knots. Water: Cold. Crowd: Light.
Further north, more remote. The wind is reliably stronger here than Big Bay. For experienced kiters who want a bigger water session.
Best for: Beginners and light-wind days. Wind: Side-shore but lighter. Water: Warm (lagoon, 18–24°C). Bottom: Sand. Crowd: Moderate.
90 minutes north of Cape Town. Flat water, warm-ish, ideal for learning. Worth the drive on a light Big Bay day.
Best for: Wave riders. Wind: Side-onshore. Water: Cold. Bottom: Sand.
Closer to town than Big Bay. Smaller, more wave-influenced. Less popular but often empty.
Best for: Big-wave kiting only. Wind: Strong S/SE. Water: Cold. Crowd: Local pros.
Out on the Cape Peninsula. Reef bottom, strong currents, big waves. Pros only.
The South Easter is a thermal wind — it builds in response to temperature contrast between cold ocean and hot interior. The hotter the inland day, the stronger the wind by afternoon. Forecasts use the "berg gradient" — the pressure differential between coastal and interior — to predict wind strength. A gradient of 8 hPa+ usually means a 25-30 knot day. 12 hPa+ is bridge of doom territory.
Big Bay has 5+ established kite schools (Cabrinha, Naish, North, Cape Sport, Kite the Cape). Beginner courses run 6–10 hours over 3–5 days. Cost R6,000–R12,000 typically. Equipment rental for certified kiters is R600–R900/day for a kite + board + wetsuit.
